Burnt out tail light?

I drive a 2000 jeep grand cherokee, recently the tail light went out on the left side so i replaced the bulb. The break light was still working when the tail light went out, and still works now after changing the bulb, but the tail light wont remain lit when my headlights are on at night. The brake light and tail light are the same bulb but the tail lights wont stay on... is it somethign with the wiring, how much does something like this cost to fix?

check the fuse to the running lights. the running light and the brake light areon seperate fuses.

Sounds like a simple wireing fault. Start by checking all the wires that connect to the light and bulb, make sure there is no corrosion and it is getting a good contact.

Next it could be a faulty earth at some point in the wireing...that could be harder to track down.

Cars use what is called a negative earth, basically the chassis of the car carrys the negative current from the battary while the positive is carried by wire.

At various points around the car your wireing harness will be connected to 'earth' (the chassis) and a bad connection at any one of these points can cause problems like this.
