Car help! emergency!!!?

I have a 95 chevy lumina. I have put so much money into this car ( tires, new gas tank, water pump, mirror, etc!!) It's always one problem after another. Now my brakes are really bad and they make a loud grinding/scraping noise. I really don't have the money for any of this. Do i need rotars? or just brake pads? PLEASE help. I know nothing about cars
Car help! emergency!!!?
Probably both.
Car help! emergency!!!?
just brake pads unless you been using them for two long so it depends
Reply:Both, sounds like you've driven past the normal time for replacing your brake pads and shoes, I wouldn't drive it too much more without getting them taken care of, go get them checked out and /or replaced.
Reply:Most likely you only need pads, but nobody will touch your car without changing the rotars because not doing so could be blamed for an accident which makes a shop liable. I've run cars for years on rotors with grooves deeper than 1/8" and one of them is still driven every day by an old friend. The pads look really funny when they do wear out because they still have one area of a lot of pad but it'll still lock the wheel up as fast as ever.

Since you're asking, you will likely have a pro do the brakes and you'll end up changing the rotars.
Reply:The only way to know if you need rotors is to have someone (a shop) measure the thickness (mic) with a micrometer. There is a minimum thickness that the rotors can be. If you take the vehicle to a shop I would suggest that you ask them to show you the measurements from mic'ing the rotors. If the rotors are too thin they will need to be replaced. Having a rotor that is too thin can not only cause more problems (blown caliper piston seals) it can also be dangerous. Replacing the pads and rotors on your Lumina should run you about $200 to $250 in parts (using quality parts) and at most two hours of labor which the price varies by shop and area ($70.00 per hour here). Hope this helps.
