Air conditioner blows cool air and turns into hot air after a while?

It is a old 2 year old ac goldstar that used to cool untill i turned it on in the winter (heaters in my apartment would not lower) and it would work fine untill one dreadfull hot summer day it was 98 and it turned to a fan like state when it was on its highest cooling level and now the cool air state last for about the longest 4 min and the hot air at longest 20 min. My mom said the coils froze is this ture or it has nothing to do with the winter thing.

It's true, extreme humidity can cause this. also make sure your outside fins are clean, unplug the unit and take your cover off and thouroughly clean the filter and inside of the coils, wait for unit to completely dry before plugging back in.
Reply:you might need to recharge it.... go to like autozone or kragen and tell them u need to recharge your ac and they'll show you the right cans. is like a spray can, if you don't know how to do it look online for help or go to an auto shop and they can do it for you :)
Reply:Sounds like your A/c is low on freon. One way to tell is to put a thermometer in the front grill. The temp should be 12 to 18 degrees lower than the room temp. If your mom has seen the coil with ice on it , that too is a sign of a low charge. But , with out checking the unit other possibilities are present like a clogged evaporator coil, the one in the front of the unit. I am guessing it's a window unit. Have it checked out by a tech and if it's not worth it scrap it.
Reply:Goldstar is a brand of room air conditioners. Since this question is posted in Cars %26amp; Transportation %26gt; Maintenance %26amp; Repairs, you might get some misleading answers.

Regardless, when air conditioners have a low refrigerant charge they cool for a short period of time and then blow warm air.

There is little chance that running it in the winter had anything to do with it not working now. Heat pumps are little more than air conditioners that run in the winter (coils reversed).
