Why is my check engine light still on?

I have a 98 Toyota Corolla. I checked the oil, its fine. I checked the antifreeze, it's also fine. But the check engine light is still on. What could be the problem?
Why is my check engine light still on?
funny

"Check engine" means an emissions component is out of spec.

Expect to pay about $300. only the dealer is trained to diagnose it correctly.

Everyone here asks about the Check engine light here.
Why is my check engine light still on?
check engine light comes on with the emission system(computer and fuel injection) you need to get the computer on your car scanned to see what the problem is. its not a maintenance issue its a fuel injection/emission problem

good luck
Reply:The Check Engine light comes on when your vehicle's on-board diagnostic computer detects a problem. Usually, the problem is emissions related (bad oxygen sensor, faulty EGR valve, etc.). It's nothing to panic over, but you need to get your vehicle into the shop as soon as possible. The diagnostic trouble code needs to be extracted from the computer in order to determine what further diagnostics need to be performed and what repairs are necessary.

The above post is incorrect. Most any decent shop can pull the code from your vehicle's computer as well as diagnose and repair the cause of the problem much cheaper than the dealer can. Most will pull the code for free. Several auto parts stores will pull the code for free as well. Remember though, pulling the code is not diagnosing the problem. It is only a starting point.

I recommend you have the code pulled at some place like Auto Zone and then take it to a mechanic. You can come back here and post the code and someone will tell you what it means and what the probable causes are. That way, you make sure the shop you've taken it to is being straight with you.
Reply:The OBD2 system has a code.

ECM- Electronic control module needs to be read for codes and faults found and cleared.
Reply:Check engine light should be renamed "please have the engine code scanned" light.

The light itself does NOT give any indication of WHAT is wrong. It can be one of many HUNDREDS of things. So get that code scanned. You can even get it scanned for free at Autozone and other auto parts dealer.

Then come back here with the code (number).

Good Luck...
Reply:Your check engine light is to indicate something is wrong with your cars emissions system, go to dealer or authorized smog station or smog repair shop to find out what the problem is, its got nothing to do with maintence,( the items you looked at)
Reply:go to a auto zone, they will hook up a scan tool to your ECM data plug and read the M.I.L. code for you......hell, it could be a loose gas cap.....but, go there and they will check it for free....but dont take their advise, write down the code and research urself, or go to a shop....good luck...
