How do you switch a Automatic transmission to a manual transmission?

I want to get a manual, but they are so hard to find, and I have quite a few choices for automatics. I was wondering how hard it would be, If I would be able to do it myself.
How do you switch a Automatic transmission to a manual transmission?
You can do it on certain cars, but it is very costly, requires a donor car, and a lot of labor. Your best bet is to keep looking and find a car you like with a manual transmission. Even if its more expensive at first, its far cheaper than converting an automatic to a manual. It's actually easier and cheaper to convert a manual to an automatic. You don't need to worry about the linkages or a 3rd pedal

To switch an automatic to a manual, you would have to be an experience mechanic who has done a lot of drivetrain work. Take it to an ASE certified mechanic and have him do it. Don't even waste your time. You could hurt yourself and your engine in the process.

You're probably looking at around $2000 all said and done, so this is not a cheap expenditure.

Good luck and sorry for the bad news.
Reply:Hubby did this with one of our trucks. You need new tranny and adapter kit for shift. It took him and 2 others 2 days to do it. I would just keep looking. There are shifts out there I have 2. Wouldn't trade them for any thing!
Reply:Keep looking and buy the car you want! Too costly and labor intense to do it.
Reply:It would really help if you told us what the heck you were driving. Did it even come with a manual trans from the factory? I kind of doubt that the rest of the world is driving the same thing as you are, and live in the same town. Are you the person that races down the street in the blue car? Maybe you should get a muffler on that thing.
Reply:you did not say what year or model, newer than 1980, will cause the check engine light to come on. 1979 and older you are looking at cutting a hole in the floor of your car, possible linkage, changing the drive shaft, moving or changing the transmission mount. and cross member, removing the automatic linkage and prndl from the car.

in short: if you want a manual transmission, buy a car with a manual transmission.
Reply:its easiest the othr way around why trying to save gas its not worth it unless you race
Reply:Q1. What sort of car is it?

Q2. Do you have any mechanical ability.

Q3. Are you prepared to pay the extra cost just to have a manual.

Depending on the year make and model of the car will depend what you need.

To do the conversion, you will at least need some of the following, perhaps all.

Manual engine wiring harness.

Manual flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, thrust bearing.

Possibly an adaptor to mount the flywheel to the crank.

Manual gearbox.

Manual crossmember and gearbox mounts.

Manual tailshaft, or new yoke to suit manual output spline.

New pedal box.

New console to suit manual stick.

New speedo cable/drive/gear/reader.

It is a full days work, if not more for a mechanic, with proper tools and a hoist. For someone at home in their own garage, it would be a nightmare to say the least.

Dont waste your time and money. Buy the car you want rather than modify one.
Reply:whoaa, you gonna do it by your self?

its very hard job, even the shop took a week to do that,

if manual trans to auto trans, its easy,

but auto to manual, wow thats a very hard job.

i did it to my 240 and cost me lot of money, its same like you buy another engine + labor

better you buy manual trans car,its cheaper.

really though
