What is the purpose of an engine fan in a motor vehicle?

When you are in slow traffic or just idling, there's no air flow in and out of the radiator. The fan makes sure your car does not over heat in these conditions.

Good Luck...
What is the purpose of an engine fan in a motor vehicle?
To draw air over the radiator for extra cooling.
What is the purpose of an engine fan in a motor vehicle?
To suck in more air and make it go faster down the road. Actually it is there to draw air thru the radiator to assist in cooling the engine when the vehicle is under 20 mph and has minimal airflow thru the rad. No air flow thru the rad means that it cannot tranfer heat from the coolant (thru rad ) into the air , hence the motor overheats. Also works the same way in an air cooled motor (VW Bug / Porsche ) or a simple lawn mower motor. Air over the cyl (s) provides cool air . Even a motorcycle engine needs air flowing over it , or it will oveheat and sieze up
Reply:to keep the engine from overheating.....on gas engines, after about 35 mph, the fan is not needed, because of the air flow across the radiator....if its a diesel, then it must work all of the time, or it will overheat, no matter how fast u are driving...
Reply:the reason there is a fan is to draw cold air through the radiator to cool the fluid when the radiator hits a certain temperature the fan kicks on to help cool it.
