Question about ignition switch/cylinder?

What is the difference between an ignition switch and an ignition cylinder? I'm having the hardest time, turning the key on when i put the key in, I already had the starter changed and i'm regretting it, turns out it might just have been the ignition switch(so I read)--anyone?
Question about ignition switch/cylinder?
Like you cant turn the key or when you move it to run it dose nothing. If you cant move it its the key / ignition cylinder but i dont know why you would replace the starter if you cant turn the key... and if it does nothing then it might be a clutch safety switch / neutral safety switch or the starter
Question about ignition switch/cylinder?
if you put the key in and it wont turn at all its the cylinder. if you put the key in and it turns but the car wont start it could be the swith or the starter or a few other things. way you described it sounds like the cylinder. What kind of car is it?
Reply:the ignition switch is the whole setup... the cylinder is where the key goes in and turns it... u can usally replace it with a brandnew ignition switch and cylinder they usally come with a set of new keys... which ever is cheaper...
Reply:A switch is the electrical contact assembly, that makes the car start.

The cylinder is part of the ignition lock assembly that prevents the car from starting with the wrong key..

Go to a hardware store and get some graphite, and "puff" into the key slot. Insert key into slot and remove several times, more graphite,"jiggle" key on and off,and really work the graphite into the lock cylinder. If this don't fix it,time to change the lock cylinder...
