I have a 1999 Ford F250 7.3L diesel that is running terrible. I ran it out of fuel a week ago. Put more fuel in it and it ran horrible, wouldn't go over 30 mph all the way home. It sat over night and ran great the next morning until I ran it a while (about 15 or 20 minutes) and it lost all its power again. Let it sit again and it ran fine until it warmed up again. Had my mechanic hook it to the computer and no codes were showing, so he changed out the fuel filter. Ran fine again for about 15 minutes. Now the code is showing that i need a map sensor. Mechanic wants to charge me about $700 for labor and parts to change out the map sensor. OK..i know i'm a girl with a big truck but i'm not completely stupid.....can someone give me an idea of what is wrong with my truck and how bad my mechanic is screwing me over?
1999 Ford F250 diesel problems?
The 7.3 has more than 1 fuel filter. The one has a petcock so that it may be drained. I would try that first. Map Sensor' can flash trouble code, but most can be reprogrammed if needed. Has the mass air flow sensor be cleaned lately? It can build up and cause a run rich condition (Black smoke)
1999 Ford F250 diesel problems?
I kno the problem...diesel is expensive as hell...buy a honda civic ....
Reply:im not exactly sure what is wrong with your diesel but we have a 7.3 diesel (the only good diesel ford ever made) in a 2002 ford F-250 and its been a damn good motor but that are spendy to fix even for parts the 7.3L are spendy
Reply:Ford has some kind of funky little vaccum module that will set that code and make your truck run crappy. Sorry I dont know the name of it but we had the same problem like this in San Pedro Ca. I would get a second est from a good diesel shop or a dealer that works on a lot of diesels. Price sounds right but not the part.
Hope this helps some
Reply:I am a Euro Technician mainly, but my recommendation for you is to stop by a Ford Dealership. You can even give them a call, to get the price for the parts required. If you go in person they will be nicer to a girl, than a guy.
The mechanic must state the parts needed, so match them and factor in his time "to yourself". If it makes sense for the amount of hours, than go ahead.
It sounds a little pricey to me, for just running out of gas. Check to make sure all fuel filters were checked. Fill up with a nice fresh diesel. Make sure codes are clear, and go mash it on the freeway to clear it all out! It's yours!
