Pros: increased air flow, possibly increased power
Cons: dust and dirt and grit can get into your engine, scratching up the cylinder walls, necessitating rebuild far sooner.
It is almost never worth it to do this. (The only exception would MAYBE be some forms of racing, if you can afford to rebuild the engine after less than a few hundred miles)
What are the pros and cons of taking the air cleaner setup off of my 1995 firebird v6?
Pro's - SMALL horsepower gain (if not a loss due to sucking in hot air)
- Cool sucking noise.
Con's. - ILLEGAL
-Engines efi wont work correctly as too much air will be drawn in
-Engine will draw hot air in.
-Engines air intake will not be filtered and dirt and water can enter the plenum
-Anything near the intake will be sucked into the plenum and cause major damage.
-Fuel economy will worsen as the mixtures and air fuel ratios will be wrong.
Dont do it.
What are the pros and cons of taking the air cleaner setup off of my 1995 firebird v6?
I'm not to sure there are any pros to doing this.
Your engine may be able to pull some more air in but this may be offset by an actual decrease in turbulance which can affect the combustion process, decrease power, and let more dirt into the engine. If you want the engine (remember they are actually just pumps) to get more air and if it is restricted now by the factory set up, why not get an air intake kit from the aftermarket, like Summit Racing or J.C. Whitney or your local parts store.
