How can I find out what fuse voltage(?) I need for the fuse?

Someone removed the actual fuse so I can't tell by that, and my diagram in my manual is not even close to accurate. So, I don't know what voltage (or whatever measurement is used) is needed. I was told that if I use the wrong voltage, I could cause damage. So, my other question is, what damage could be caused? Is it just blowing that fuse or doing actual damage to the car. Also, my dealership is not being helpful right now, aside from telling me that it'll cost $310, so that's not an option. Thanks.

what type of car?

fuses are rated in amps, a measure of current, not voltage. IF you've blown a fuse, somethign is seriously wrong with your car. These are the sort of problems that can cause a car fire, a bit more costly than a $300 repair job.

Most often the fuse box cover will show what fuse (amp rating) is located in each socket. I'd presume whoever removed the fuse was attempting to disable whateve was broken. Fix this first.

Reply:use a 20 amp, works good for just about anything except A/C and if you have a short a 20 amp will blow before any damage is done, always keep a few in the glove box.
Reply:your gonna have to look at wiring diagrams for the circuit.

fuses are meant to handle double the amount of amperage that the circuit is expected to output.

it is ok to use a smaller fuse than it calls for..but using one too high could cause damage.

contrary to what everybody believes...fuses are in place to protect the wiring. so if you got too much amperage running through a wire with a gauge that cannot handle the amperage..and you have a fuse that will not blow under that amperage..the wires themselves will act as a fuse and burn up and break.

if you absolutely need a fuse in the circuit asap..run a low amperage fuse like a 5 amp or a 10 amp..and see how that works..chances are youll be ok..but out the correct one asap
Reply:normally on the cover for the fuse box there is a diagram that shows what amp fuse is in each position the owners manual shows the same thing,a common problem i see is people use the cigarette lighter port for cell or computer depending on how the tip is shaped it will pop the fuse, the danger i putting a too high amp fuse is if you have a component fail the wire may burn before the fuse would blow so if you have a fuse that blows a lot find the short or the cause and fix it
Reply:ask someone with the same car if you can look at their fuse box
