Relay clicking?

My car wont start, the fuel pump was already changed and i was told that it might be the main fuel relay. when i take the relay off and wait for a couple minutes and i put it back, thats when the car start but i push the gas pedal and it starts dying. when i turn the ignition on, i hear a clicking noise on the relay. does this mean its going bad?

dosent mean the relay is goin bad most likly you have a short some were or your not getting the right amount of power to it get a new relay and try it out thats a cheap why to find out whats wrong kinda unfortunately if it does the same as the old relay ur gonna need to pay some one to diagnose the whip and tell you were in your wiring you have a prob

When you turn on the ignition, you WILL hear the fuel relay click in, then out again. But do you hear the pump run when it does? The relay probably has identical relays nearby, try a substitution.


However, once the engine starts, the relay has done its job, the engine should not die. So it's back to the fuel pump and the filters to check their viability.
Reply:no..that clicking noise is an electromagnet pulling a switch to close the circuit...its perfectly normal and your relay is working fine.





make sure you hear your fuel pump buzzing when you turn the key on..check fuel pressure.. also





if you understand how a relay works you can bypass it by jumping terminals.





a relay consists of either 4 or 5 terminals. youll see numbers like 86, 85, 30, 87 and 87a





terminals 86 and 85 are the electromagnet. 86 would be source voltage and 85 would be ground.





30, 87 and 87a are the terminals for the switch...since this relay has only one function i assume that 87a or 87 will not be used.





if you simply jump a wire from 30 to 87 or 87a..whichever one is there. you would be bypassing the relay and if your fuel pump then kicks on thats what the problem was.
Reply:Not necessarily. Relays make a clicking sound when they are working. I would be more suspect of a relay that wasn't making ANY noise.
