Engine overheats (cat turned a bright red orange color)??

my 1987 honda civic has 115301 miles on it i ran it for a bout 10 min i got home took the key out and the engine was still running. i looked under the hood and the cat converter was a birght orange color (was very hot) for about 40 min then the car shut off my it self, im thinking its a bad o2 sensor or bad cat???? any suggestions???

A Converter will get red hot when raw fuel is introduced directly into it. This is not the problem of the converter itself, but the result of a problem with the fuel system or ignition that allows unburned fuel to pass through the engine to the converter. Possible causes are improper ignition timing, fouled spark plugs, and air pump failure.

Good Luck...

Oddly enough you didn't mention if the check engine light was on, which would store the codes of the problem areas?

OBD-1 systems are a lot simplier to read. You should be able to ground certain pins on hte ALDL box that will flash the codes for you thru the check engine light which will enable you to get an idea of what is wrong. I got a little credit card looking thing at auto zone that has a couple pins sticking up that enables me to do this. It works! It even has the codes listed on it!

If it doesn't have a computer it won't have an O2 sensor, but it will have a converter. It sounds dangerous! good luck.
Reply:that dude up there is right, theres some sort of combustion happening inside ur cat change ur spark plugs and check if the ignition timing is correct
Reply:You must colour change of civic.brown %26amp; blue colour is cold so use than.
