B16 motor swap on 90 integra?

I just got done putting a ls vtec in my 90 integra and on the pgm, there is olny a place to plug in one or the other..

Either the regulator control solenoid valvle or the purge cut solenoid valve, the are the little black things next to the map censor, the regulator is the one on the passenger side and of course the purge is on the driver side, does anybody know what one i wanna plug into the fuel manifold, or do i wanna just splice them together, i have the regulator pluged in right know the car seems to run fine, but is that correct?

What simple way to determine whether fuel injector is spaying gas or has a bad valve.?

Spark plug is firing. Fuel injector lead shows electrical charge. Compression is at 130. One mechanic says the fuel injector is the problem because not spraying gas. Other mechanic says fuel injector is spraying gas. Says the problem is a faulty valve. It appears that both are guessing. Fuel injectors cannot be taken out unless you take off the head. How do I decide which is the problem. .
What simple way to determine whether fuel injector is spaying gas or has a bad valve.?
Simple. You can get automotive stethoscope like this

http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605...

or just use a long stick. Touch one end of the stick to the injectors and the other end to your ear. The sound should travel to your ear. If all the injector are firing, they would all sound about the same. The dead injector will sound muffled or nothing.

But that only says that the injectors are opening and closing. It could still be clogged. In which case you should at least try fuel injector cleaners.

Good Luck...
What simple way to determine whether fuel injector is spaying gas or has a bad valve.?
That last one was a good answer! The only thing I would add to that is .. it seems like you had a compression test done because you report a 130 lbs figure, and that sounds nice and high. Are all of the other cylinders +/- 5 lbs off from that 130 number? What I am getting at is if you had a bad valve (leaking or bent, not seating properly, etc) then the compression will be lower for that particular cylinder.

So maybe you can rule out half of the equation right there. Of course you didn't say what model/year the vehicle was so we don't know if you can use a cheap Harbor Freight ODB-II code reader (just $39 and SO worth it), which might tell you the EXACT problem, right down to which injector is bad.. or if you're not burning all the fuel in X cylinder.

As the last gentleman recommended, buy a couple bottles of injector cleaner and dump them into your $80 full tank of gas.
Reply:fuel injectors can _ be removed from the cylinder head_ separately, fuel spray patterns can be checked buy any technician with suitable test rig. the compression looks ok!
Reply:One thing you might try is running your engine with one f.i. disconnected electrically at a time.

Either way, they're saying they think you have a bad injector. That might help to show if you do.

You didn't say you took your car to a mechanic.
Reply:if it has compression the same as the others it is not the valve, you can swap over 2 of the in jectors and see if the problem is the injector, then it would mis fire on the cylinder you swapped it to

I recently had to buy a new Goodyear Eagle RSA for my monte carlo ss and was wondering about the cost?

seemed like $236 was high! Why are these tires so expensive??
I recently had to buy a new Goodyear Eagle RSA for my monte carlo ss and was wondering about the cost?
if it was 236 each you got bent over and there was no lube used but if it was 236 for the set you didnt get off to bad i just put tires on my truck and they where 175 each so dont feel bad
I recently had to buy a new Goodyear Eagle RSA for my monte carlo ss and was wondering about the cost?
Goodyear cost tony Stewart from thee wins this year, the tire's are just not cutting it, better tires are Firestone they won the Indy 500 this year(they were the first tire at indy) and , Uniroyal, Yokohama all good brands, Goodyear is over priced and over rated , , They cost more because your paying for what they have brainwashed people with as the best tires , they are ok, very far from being the best. There are well all brands sold in America must pass the D.O.T. Department of Transportation Regulations, to be sold in America, so there are cheaper tires with names you never herd of ,that are equal or better than Goodyear, fact, I have a Indy 500 Fire Hawks on one truck,(same compound as the Indy tire but treadled, and Uniroyal on the other, and Michelin on the other , they all have the same guarantee, you can go to any big tire store and ask them for the equivalent tire that of good year and buy theses you will be just fine , I have been doing this 30 years, there used to be a tire at pep boys called Torque Twisters, they quit selling em in the mid 70's cause they did not wearout, and in 1980 toyo tires were cheap but same rating as the equevelent tire sold hundreds of em, no one heard of em now its a top brand big as goodyear, also sam winston sold the best tire for the money , Winston Tire Lifetime warrenty but when he died they closed and sold out but I dont know to whom, best bet , Go to wall mart they have all name brand tires, all four profesionaly mounted with the letters out ,or black wall, or low pro, and it will cost you under $300.bucks, and free rotation when needed , same with costco and sams club. Sams club is owned by Walmart, hope I help you good luck.
Reply:For that particular tire for that particular car the price is about right.

Why are they so expensive? Why is the car so much fun to drive? A lot of that comes down to the tires which in this case are big, have a high speed rating and very low profile.

Personally though I am not a big fan of the RS-A. I think there are a lot of tires out there that do as well or better for a lot less money. A Firestone Firehawk GT for example is probably a better tire for around $100 less.

Something to keep in mind for the next set. These don't last long anyway.

Why does it seem my 4runner guzzles gas! (please dont say gas prices)?

I drive a 1994 Toyota 4runner! I know its known for low MPG. I think I get about 10 MPG according to http://www.fueleconomy.gov/

What can I do to get better MPG? Repairs? Tweaks? The idle is very low. What causes MPG to decrease?

my husband and I think I get less than 10 MPG. He's gonna make me sell my 4runner for a more fuel effecient car. HELP!!
Why does it seem my 4runner guzzles gas! (please dont say gas prices)?
Don't go chasing bad MPG unless you are sure of it. You could be spending time and money chasing ghosts. So try this experiment first:

(a) fill the tank to the max

(b) get on the HWY - late night / no traffic hour

(c) drive about 20 to 30 miles (at 55 MPH)

(d) use cruise control - very important

(e) note the EXACT MILES

(f) get off and immediately get gas

(g) note the EXACT GALLONS

Now you can calculate the MPG by

MPG = MILES (step e) / GALLONS (step g).

The reason you start out with full tank is that is the "repeateable" condition. You want to avoid traffic so you don't use the brakes on the HWY. Braking will negatively affect the MPG calculation. You use the cruise control so you and eliminate your driving habit as a factor.

Without a good MPG calculation you might be wasting your money chasing ghosts. Also you can repeat this test anytime you feel like you car is not running right. You can also try the same thing but off the cruise control to check how much your driving habit affect the MPG. etc.

====

There are few thing you can do to save (or maximize) gas MPG. First get a tune-up.

(1) spark plugs

(2) spark plug wires

(3) distributors, coil, rotors (if you have them).

(4) new air filter

(5) PCV

(6) correct tire pressure

(7) clear the trunk of useless heavy items

(8) spray clean MAF sensors

====

Forget all those "SAVE GAS" scams. This was on NBC morning TV show. The difference is as much as 38% (their claim). There are very simple rules to save gas:

(1) drive slow - not too much past 55

(2) accelerate slowly

(3) don't brake unnecessarily

(4) use cruise control - whenever it is safe to do so.

Don't coast - it is NOT safe and it does NOT save gas.

The above really works. Using those simple rules I was able to drive from Boston to NYC (210.5 miles) on just 5.112 gallon (94 Civic). That's 41 MPG (94 Civic 187K miles). Actually I was speeding at 72 MPH so I could do even better at 55.

WOW !!

===

Compare before and after MPG using the first set of rule any time you think your MPG has changed.

Good Luck...

=== UPDATE ===

One greatly over looked sensor is the WATER TEMP sensor. If this sensor fails, the computer constantly think the engine is cold (forever) and runs the car in RUN RICH (extra fuel burned) mode. And to top it off, the great check engine light does not even come on (because in the extreme cold it really does take forever to warm up - and this is a correct behavior but only for extreme winter).
Why does it seem my 4runner guzzles gas! (please dont say gas prices)?
Heavy truck, small engine, the engine has to work harder to get the car moving.
Reply:It's a V6 i take it..Petrol 4x4's tend to use between 15 and 20 litres per 100km / 60 miles. I know petrol patrols use 20L and my dads v6 pathfinder uses 17L. My diesel 4x4 uses around 10/11 L / per 100km. You could convert it to LPG which would cost a couple of grend but fuel is about 1/2 price

I did an experiment the other week, Every time i came to a down hill or could see it was stopped far ahead i wacked it into nuetral and coasted.(DO NOT TRY IT IF IT IS AUTO) I managed an extra 100km out of my tank. It is not a good thing to do long term as you increase wear and tear on just about everything.....
Reply:OK the 4 runner that you have has a 3,0 V-6 right ? good truck, but its a heavy vehicle and you need to really give it the gas when your going on the freeway , the 1994 was a good year, but fuel was cheaper ,then, I like the 4 runner well built, but poor fuel, you can buy a new 4 runner and get great power and and great fuel millage, 14 year sine that was built they have come a long way sounds like to me you still like the 4 runner feel, so stay with that type of truck ,cause a Chevy 3/4 ton four door long bed brand new gets 10 miles to the gallon, now that's with all the bells and whistles, so don't go that direction, I would go to the ford dealer and test drive a sport track or a freestyle all most 40 mpg 4x4 and east to drive and 100,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty, and very powerful more than the Toyota, and better on fuel, buy American keep it strong
Reply:I can't offer you any help with your current vehicle, but I live in the UK %26amp; we have 4Runners over here, as well as a lot of Japanese import Toyota Surfs. In the UK, we pay a terrific amount fo fuel, so these vehicles tend to mainly be diesels, and I know the Toyotas are considered heavy on fuel here too: The UK vehicles are 99% manuals, but the imports are mainly autos, and I know the average for a diesel auto is around 20-24mpg.

If you like the car, look for a diesel: I know they're not common in the US, but I feel they'll become a lot more so as your fuel prices go up.

Performance wise, turbo diesels offer a lot more low down power: If you can afford a newer one, their performance is fantastic - I have a 2 litre turbo diesel Vauxhall van which is much, much quicker than my 2 litre Honda Accord VTec.

ps Today, we're paying $10.00 a gallon for petrol %26amp; $11.31 a gallon for diesel.

Hope it doesn't come your way too quick!

I got this board at the royal show . Is there anyway i could get it to spin for longer

Yes - apply some spray lube. Lithium grease would be best but even WD40 would work.

You can get lithium grease at any auto parts dealer. You can get WD 40 eveywhere (sears, homedepot, autoparts dealer, etc.)

How much would it cost to get my two front windows tinted?

Well yeah, how much would it cost to get my two front windows tinted in San Diego, with the highest quality legal tint that doesn't bubble and what not.
How much would it cost to get my two front windows tinted?
In San Diego it will probably cost you like $75 to do the front two windows with a good tint. I got it done in Riverside and it cost me $25 a window for the fronts (+$5 extra each window for having to remove my old tint) so front 2 windows cost me $60. Even good quality tints will eventually bubble one day, so what you wanna do is find a Tint shop that offers lifetime warranty so if it ever bubbles go back and get it re-done.

What is a starter relay?

does it make the starter move from slow to fast averagely??
What is a starter relay?
No.

When you turn your key, the electric switch inside is very small and can NOT handle much electrical power. So that signal (on signal) is carried to the starter RELAY in turns on the HIGHER current (higher power) switch to crank the engine.

Basically relay allow low power electric signal to switch high power electrical devices.

There's a second definition of starter relay

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starter_sol...

Good Luck...
What is a starter relay?
That last guy really did a good job!

You know how when your car battery is almost dead, and the car cranks... slower .. and sloowwwwer, and then you hear that CLICKETY-CLICK-CLICK. It scares you, so you turn the key off and say a prayer to YOURSELF, and then turn the key again, and CLICK CLICK.. - That's the Starter Relay -

If you can find it on your car, and it's the older type like the above gentleman's picture shows, since it's already bad (?) take a second and unplug the ( - ) negative battery cable and tuck it out of the way, then find a BIG FAT steel bolt, maybe four or five inches long. Then hold it in your hand nice and tight and put one side of it against the TOP METAL DOME/COVER of the starter relay take a regular hammer and give it two or three quick taps.

Basically, the guts inside the relay will stick after awhile, and since they're not made to be opened up, you can just whack, excuse me, ' tap ' the top of the relay with a hammer and it will spring loose and work for another week.

.. and don't forget to put the battery cable back on. ; )

Water leak under car help!?

I just parked my car and have noticed a puddle of water under the car .. pretty big too, not a little drop or anything! the fluid is clear and doesn't have a smell looks just like water to me. We haven't had any rain today (did yesterday) and I haven't used the air conditioning for a few weeks. What could it be? Should I be concerned? as you can probably tell I don't know a thing about cars so I don't want to take it to a mechanic for them to charge me $$ for just having a look even if it's nothing. It had a major service at the end of april, and has done 23,000 kms. It just had it's windscreen replaced today due to a crack if that makes any difference, would they have used water?? (told you i had no idea!)

If it's water, were is it coming from and does it need to be topped up? (will take it to my dad!)

thank you
Water leak under car help!?
The water is from your air conditioning. Perfectly normal.
Water leak under car help!?
It is totally normal, I'm guessing that you were running the air conditioner... It's the condensation, it is totally normal

It cannot be the coolant because it smells and it's greenish yellowish...

Bring it to a mechanic if you're not sure, but I'm 95% sure that it's the condensation of the air conditioner, which is totally normal
Reply:I'm no genius when it comes to car either....first things that come to mind are your rad might have a leak or maybe it's something to do with the a/c.

Could be a pricey fix either way. (But then, aren't they always pricey fixes when cars crap out?)
Reply:What sort of car do you have? Ur name is swifty05..

Do u have a suzuki swift? I do :)

IM not sure what this water is.. I would have said

air conditioning. IS your coolant leaking? It's suppose

to be green... but some people use water.

Check if its coming from the back or front end also.

Best taking it to tour dad.. thats what I do =D x
Reply:I had a question like this earlier this year...then I realized the car was parked in the evening next to a sprinkler...and whenever I wasn't on the incline of the driveway the car would appear to "leak" water....I really doubt that is the case though

I would guess that it is condensation from a humidity and and your air conditioner maybe pooling up somewhere and leaking later. You can always take a peek under the hood with a flashlight and see if you spot anything obvious...I would shut off the car first :P

...I really only worry about leaks that are red, brown, and green
Reply:Check the radiator for proper amount of coolant. If your coolant is green(like it should be) and the water on the ground is clear then you don't have a problem with your engine. If you are running straight water in the radiator then you could have a problem with the cooling system.Keep an eye on the temp gage.
Reply:SEEING AS THE WIDSCREEN WAS REPLACED TODAY:

Possibly windscreen washers not connected, or hose cracked or broken when they fitted new screen. The pipe runs along close to bottom of screen in some cars, and is the most likely. Try washers - if they don't squirt on screen, that's your problem.

However, if it is DEFINITELY only water then the next most likely is air con after standing and then starting car with air con already turned on. Simply condensation AND NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT. I wouldn't expect to find "pretty big" pool of water though, which is why I 'd make it second most likely.

You would notice antifreeze if it was radiator, or hose in the cooling system, I'd have thought.

Could also be a heater hose that was disconnected when the windscreen guys did their work, tempory if it got in their way.

Other than that - there aren't too many p[laces water can come from.

OK If it has only started since the windscreen was replaced, take the car back to them, explain the puddle and ask them

a] was a washer hose disconnected during the replacement

b] Was a heater hose disconnected? If so could they please check that they have connected them up correctly.

you need to get the correct car model steering wheel
Will a steering wheel fit to any car? and whatabout the connector hub?!?
If you are replacing the steeringwheel with a standard one, you will need to get one off the same make and model car.

There are some steering wheels that will fit on different models, but you couldnt put one off a Chev onto the Mitsu.

You may find one off a Mitsu van slightly older or newer will fit, and possibly off other Mitsu models, but when you go to the wrecking yard, ask them, they will know more.

If you mean a sports steeringwheel, yes, practically any sports steeringwheel will fit onto any car, as long as you have the correct boss kit (or hub) to connect to the wheel and the car, and the car doesnt have airbags. This would be your better option.
Reply:Go to a Jap wrecker and find the same model as yours with less kms on it and the steering wheel should be better on it. If you want to get an after market sports steering wheel you will have to get a boss kit for it, you can find these at supacheap auto or Repco etc where you can also get a sports wheel, but the wrecker will probally work out cheaper and easier.

Cost to replace a 1997 VW Golf brake booster?

I've just been out in my car and the brakes seemed a bit dull and slow to respond, and now they have started hissing too. Some online research seems to indicate my brake booster has failed, can anyone with a little car knowledge tell me if they think this is right and tell me how much it costs to repair/replace? The prices seem to vary a lot online.

Obviously I'm going to book it in the garage but I'd just like a rough idea first. Thanks!
Cost to replace a 1997 VW Golf brake booster?
i have a 97 Jetta GLS and if you have not replaced the vacuum lines this could be the cause of your problem.

the vacuum lines that came in these cars disintegrate when the get older and causes vacuum leaks. vacuum leaks can cause the brake booster to fail as it uses vacuum from the engine to function.

if you do have to replace the brake booster then you will have to re-bleed the brake lines and that is very hard for the beginner to get right.

if you are unfamiliar with working on cars i would recommend that you should have a professional work on the brake system. think about it, that is the one system on the car that you can't have go wrong on you when you are on the road. take it to a shop that is familiar with these vehicles and get a quote, then shop around.

Sounds like a split vacuum hose to the brake servo, or the servo itself. But it needs looking at properly to diagnose the fault. Just because a fault is common does not mean that is the fault with your car. A misdiagnosis will just be a waste of money.

Some Golfs had a rubber joining peice for the servo pipe that fails too
Reply:could be just a blown vac pipe on the servo[booster] if not a brakers yard will sell you a servo for bout æ‹¢15

If you went thru autozone, and bought bosch parts which are decent quality.... you'd be looking at

$80.99 for the one after the catalitic converter

$70.99 for the one before the catalitic converter

so it depends on which one your replacing... as for how long it takes, if you have a lift, it should only take you about 20 minutes if your experienced, someone without the proper experience it may take a little longer... its literally a plug connection, and it bolts into the exhaust... so if the exhaust is really rusty, or you run into other complications it may take a little longer.

As long as the insurers have confirmation you have "tried" to find the culprit they should pay for the repairs - next step is to get a quote for the repairs - your insurer will send you a claim form and probably a list of approved repairers.

I was was having A/C trouble they said it was the ECM/Computer not sending a signal to the compressor and kicking it in. People I have talked to on this matter have never heard of this before! I was wanting to know if anybody can make sence of this or heard of this before? The rest of my car works great that would be connected to the same computer.
Does the ECM/Computer on a 1993 honda civic have anything to do with the Compressor not working?
It could be the problem. not hard hard wiring it. But make sure you double check everything. All fuses clutch connections ...everything.
Does the ECM/Computer on a 1993 honda civic have anything to do with the Compressor not working?
ECM does not control AC u prob hav a bad switch high or low pressure switch
Reply:Have a a/c tech check your system. In many cars, if your refrigerant level is low, the compressor will not engage. This protects your compressor. Your Honda may be a bit old for this failsafe, but get it checked.
Reply:I do know that the ecm will cut out the compressor under certain conditions, full throttle, etc. So it's possible that could be the problem. If you trust these guys, let them fix it. At least you should get a guarantee. Good luck.

How much does Diesel gas cost per gallon? (Continued)?

How many miles can a Diesel car go with one gallon? How much would it cost to change a regular gas car into a diesel car?
How much does Diesel gas cost per gallon? (Continued)?
Right now I think the average price is $4.60 gal. Mileage is only slightly better than gasoline. It would cost more than most cars are worth to convert.
How much does Diesel gas cost per gallon? (Continued)?
National average price of diesel is about $4.70 per gallon.

Mileage depends on the type of car, driving habits, condition of the engine, etc.

To change a regular gas car into a diesel car would entail changing the engine from a gas burner to a diesel burner. Cost of the engine plus intallation and anything else that would need to be done to the car to make it road worthy.
Reply:1. It depends on where you live.

2. It depends on the year, make, and model of the vehicle. It also depends on the driving habits of the driver and the mechanical condition of the vehicle.

3. Enough that it would probably be cheaper to buy a diesel car rather then convert one. In addition to changing the engine, you would have to change the main engine wiring harness, the computer, exhaust, etc. The labor involved would be tremendous.

Diesel is the most expensive fuel on the market right now. You may get better gas mileage with some diesels but it's more than a $1 per gallon more expensive than 87 octane gas. I don't believe the increased mileage outweighs the extra cost for diesel fuel.

Is there any way u can hard wire a wideband o2 to work like a single band?

i broke my singleband stock o2 sensor and all i have is a wideband o2 sensor.
Is there any way u can hard wire a wideband o2 to work like a single band?
Unfortunately, no, due to the way wideband and standard oxygen sensors generate their voltage signal..

Wideband sensors meter at 0-5 volts, O2 sensors generally 0-1v.

I bought a lemon car and am in bad shape...any help????

I bought a 2004 nissan maxima 2 years ago from a nissan dealership. Less than 1 year later i had major problems. After much hassle car was "fixed", but now is broke again less than 2 years later. Car is still under stupid extended warranty that they made me purchase. But they say they will not fix it jsut like last time. dealership tells me wires are melted and it will be at least 4-5 thousand to fix. my car loan is still around 24k, not sure what to do. Ive tried my insurance, my extended waranty, dealership etc etc
I bought a lemon car and am in bad shape...any help????
Thats why $2000 cars are a better deal than Used cars that are not under or have extended warranties.

Plus newer cars (since 1996) have the dreaded OBD-II computer system, where every little thing makes the Check engine light come on, and costs YOU $300 to fix everytime.

No payments, no "full coverage insurance"
I bought a lemon car and am in bad shape...any help????
Call your local consumer's office at your state's Attorney General's office. Also contact the consumer reporter at your local TV station. The dealer will fix it quick. :-)
Reply:You might try contacting your local tv station. quite often, they have a "watchdog" system, where they help the little guy, like you and me, resolve these kinds of problems. Or call better business bureau. just make sure you have your receipts from the past. A written estimate of the current repair might be a good idea. Good luck! You could also call customer service at Nissan head office.

My car will turnover but will not fire, and the timing was recently redone what might be the problem?

Could be a cam or crank sensor. I do not know what kind of car you have or it's age.
My car will turnover but will not fire, and the timing was recently redone what might be the problem?
Yes, that could be the problem... If the timing is not set properly, then it may turn over, but it will not start if it is far enough off. Take it back to wherever you took it, and have them re-set it.

Condensation in headlight?

I got aftermarket headlights for my vehicle about a year ago. I noticed that the right headlight had condensation building up in it. Now the headlight looks like it has algae growing in it from the standing condensation. How can I get rid of that without replacing the whole unit?
Condensation in headlight?
A couple of squirts of chlorine bleach will take care of the algae, as for the condensation, remove the headlight housing and drill a small (4mm) vent hole in the rear of the housing, at the lowest point. Angled backwards 45 degrees, it will not pick up road spray, but will allow condensation to evaporate or drip out harmlessly.

If a hit and run accident occurrs, what kind of insurance would cover it?

How can you be sure you will be covered if a hit and run accident occurs? You need to get what type of insurance?
If a hit and run accident occurrs, what kind of insurance would cover it?
More than likely the reason the person left, was because they didn't have any insurance, so "uninsured motorist" insurance comes to mind. But while you have the agent on the line ask them, they know better than we do.

I have 17 inch rims on my 2005 toyota matrix. If i replaced the rims with 16 inch rims would it improve my mpg

Yep, especially in the city. you won`t have to press the pedal down so far to take-off. Unless you get fatter tires and the overall diameter doesn`t change.
I have 17 inch rims on my 2005 toyota matrix. If i replaced the rims with 16 inch rims would it improve my mpg
mcdbert is right. As long as you're lowering the dimension of the wheel and tire, you're improving the 'final drive ratio'... Smaller tires take less effort to turn.

You may also end up decreasing curb weight, which will help even more.
I have 17 inch rims on my 2005 toyota matrix. If i replaced the rims with 16 inch rims would it improve my mpg
No.

Look at the EPA estimated mileage for Toyota Matrix models fitted with 16 and 17-inch wheels.

They are the same.

Even if it did save you some miniscule percentage of fuel how much fuel would you have to save to pay for the $800-1,000 in wheels and tires you would need to buy? Your chances of braking even don't even rank.

Supercharger/Turbocharger for Infiniti Q45?

Ok I have a few more questions related to cars. Is there and existing turbo/supercharger for a V8 Infiniti Q45 year 1997? Is it worth getting one for it? Will performance be increased? Will gas mileage increase? How much would a super/turbocharger cost? Is it possible to install at home or do I need to do it in a shop?

Thanks in advanced guys, you answered my last question about the blowoff valve magnificently

What is the highest Cold cranking amp battery a 93 ford tempo gl car can take? With stock alternator?

Get the highest CCA battery that will fit under the hood. Having more doesn't "force" extra power into anything, it can't cause any harm, just gives you more cranking time before it goes dead.

Also, by having a larger battery, the relative load on it is smaller which means less wear on the battery, it will last longer before needing replacement.

Don't worry about the alternator. It only has to replace the power you took out during cranking. If you have a larger battery and cranked it a longer time, it would just take longer for the alternator to recharge the battery, no big deal.
What is the highest Cold cranking amp battery a 93 ford tempo gl car can take? With stock alternator?
Technically unlimited. In fact, a battery with a high reserve and CCA rating will improve your starting and charging system's performance.

Your only limitation is the case dimensions, or battery class.

87 dakota runs bad?

truck has 102k miles great shape, but runs rough. rebuilt carb new fuel pump, filter, plugs, wires, rotor, cap, coil. runs good when it wants to. usually bad when cold, and sometimes when warm. if i hold my hand over the carb it starve it for air it starts to idle a little better. what else can i replace
87 dakota runs bad?
Wow, you've already done nearly everything I could think of...

Does it have a carb? Or are you talking about the throttle body for the fuel injector?

You might try running some fuel injector cleaner through it - or consider replacing the rails if they are clogged.

Either that or you might've gotten a bad plug wire, or coil.
87 dakota runs bad?
Check your vacuum lines for cracks.
Reply:vacum leak from a hose.intake gasket leaking,or egr valve is bad
Reply:vacuum leak or check your catalytic converter. That many miles, probably about due. My money says a vacuum leak most likely.
Reply:It sounds to me like a vacuum leak or fuel starvation. Check the carburetor base gasket for leaks by squirting a bit of WD-40 around it, if the idle improves for a moment then dies down, you've found your vacuum leak, you can do the same thing around the brake booster hose that goes to the intake manifold, it's a usual suspect for a good sized vacuum leak as well.

If it's just idling rough, try adjusting your mixture screws. You may be running the carb a little too lean. If the carb can take a slightly larger jet, go up one size. Definately verify that you don't have a vacuum leak first though, otherwise you're just masking one imbalance with another.

How often should I have my car's tires rotated?

If it makes a difference, it's a 2008 Mazda6 with around 15,000 miles on it.
How often should I have my car's tires rotated?
I get all of my car tires rotated every other oil change (6k miles). If you got the tires reciept, most companies does this service for free, so why not?

And does it matter? Yes. Eventually it will. What happens eventually is that the tire wears down unevenly due to weight distribution.
How often should I have my car's tires rotated?
5000-6000 miles. Do not tell the Mazda dealer you haven't had it done yet, can void tire warranty. SHHHHH I have a 2008 F150 8500 miles, haven't rotated mine yet, but should. Not rotating the tires regularly can lead to flat spots and cupping in the tires. Do it ASAP.
Reply:Rotating tires is highly over rated and unnecessary if you buy good tires.

On a front wheel drive car, the front tires will wear faster than the rear tires. This means that you may need to replace the front tires more often, but the rear tires may never need replacing. I typically get 80,000 miles on rear tires, and I never rotate them. However, I have to replace the front tires about every 20,000 miles. Economically, it doesn't make a difference.

Here is the gotcha. If you buy cheap tires for the front, then the shoulder will wear out before the base tread. This is because the tires aren't very strong and the fold into the turns. So, the edges of the tires wear prematurely. Buy good tires, and that eliminates the problem.

The other myth about tires is that they all have to match. That's bologna. So long as they are similar build and similar tread patterns, you can have different front tires than rear tires. Just make sure if the back tires are "H" rated, that the front tires are also "H" rated.

The tire industry wants to make you think that your warranty is void if you don't rotate them. I've never had anyone refuse a warranty replacement because I didn't rotate the tires. In fact, I had a mini-van that I got free replacements from Discount tires 2 times because the front tires kept wearing pre-maturely. I figure they're the ones who gave me the 60,000 mile warranty. I made 'em live up to their end of the bargain.

Hundreds of CAR scratches? CAR Rust?

So I have a 2001 Honda Civic and I got this car from a very irresponsible brother.

Is there anything I can do about this?
Hundreds of CAR scratches? CAR Rust?
most of those scratches look minor they can be compounded and buffed out as for the rust it needs to be sealed before it gets worse. I didnt see much though.
Hundreds of CAR scratches? CAR Rust?
Most of those scratches look like swirl marks, others look like the after effects of washing with a sponge and bucket instead of spraying the car off first.

In any case, none of the scratches look like they've cut into the actual paint, just marred the clear coat. You can take some buffing compound and white rouge and bring the car back to a sparkling finish in no time under those conditions.

Wash the car clean of debris and dirt, let it dry, and apply rubbing compound to the clear coat, make sure you follow the manufacturer's directions, as some will tell you to let it dry, and some say start polishing while wet.

Use a good quality paste wax after the swirl marks are out, and don't forget the clay bar is your friend.

Meguiars website has plenty of tips for restoring the shine of a finish like this, check them out.

What size is a #7 O-ring?

I am working on a project and it calls for some #7 O rings. My problem is I have no idea what size that really is. When I do web searches, I can find the ID and OD but I don't see them being sold as a "#". I'm hoping someone more mechanically inclined than I can help give me some guidance on this. I bought 205/55/r16 tires whats the width of tire that would fit in this in inches?
Go to tirerack.com you can look up tire/wheel packages based on model of car, rim or tire size. Entering tire size should give you approx. ideal rim widths. You may have to search around to find the exact search area. Been awhile since I've been there.

I assume about 8"

Recommended rim widths for a P205/55R16 89H or 205/55R16 91H tire are 6.0 to 8.0 inches. 7.0 is ideal.

2001 Grand Am, Squeaky Doors?

I need to know how to fix the squeaky doors on my Grand Am. I have tried using WD40 on it, and it does not work. The noise sounds like its coming from inside the door towards the bottom. Any ideas?
2001 Grand Am, Squeaky Doors?
Get a can of PB Blaster (like WD-40 but 100 times better) Hose the hinges real good and work the door back and forth a few times. Will take care of it and will last a long time. Good stuff. About 5.00 a can!
2001 Grand Am, Squeaky Doors?
Use a white lithium grease instead of WD-40. Use the straw to squirt it in between the door hinge crevices... it may take a few swings of opening and closing for the lubricant to work it's way through and around the hinge pin.

2005 Chevy Cobalt door lock and shifter problem?

I spilled about half a cup of coffee into my shifter console. Now the shifter sometimes wont engage into drive from park.

Also the power door locks open randomly - even when the car is off and in park and after I have locked it with the remote control.

Would taking apart the shifter console and cleaning the electrical components help or is something else going wrong.

Any ideas on how to take apart that console. Could it be a blown fuse?
2005 Chevy Cobalt door lock and shifter problem?
there is a mechanism in there, probably got gummed up and is sticking. Take it apart and use a can of electrical parts cleaner to try to clean it up. If not you will have to replace. FYI that is not going to be a fun job, quite a bit involved in getting to the release mechanism.
2005 Chevy Cobalt door lock and shifter problem?
ive had the door lock malfunction happen to me too and it was indeed electrical, If it was a blown fuse it wouldnt work at all but you can check, look in your manual to see where the door lock fuse is. You could have a short in the wiring where the coffee was spilt too. to save money i would buy the how to do repair book on it and figure out how to take apart the console if you dont already know how, then see if any wires r damaged, if they r then u have eliminated one problem

What is a Monovalve and how do i know if my car has it?

94 Dodge Ram Van 250

How do i know its bad?

What would be the symptoms?
What is a Monovalve and how do i know if my car has it?
You are probably referring to the heater control valve that is typically located at the rear of the engine just next to the firewall. It controls the flow of coolant into the heater core that is located up under the dash inside the van.

If it was bad it would probably be either leaking coolant (antifreeze) and/or failing to regulate the flow of coolant. So, your symptoms would be either coolant that has leaked out onto the ground and/or not being able to get heat inside the vehicle.

The one for a 94 Dodge Ram 250 (figuring you had a 5.2L V-8), would cost about $20 at your local auto parts store. Being that it's a van, it's probably a little difficult to get to, so figure about 45-60 minutes to complete the repair.

Why does my low fuel light keep flashing?

i know the fuel is low but last time i filled it up i filled it up 40 liters when the tank is a 50 liter. shouldn't the light go on when i got lie a liter left not 10 liters left. is it because when u drive the fuel swashes around in the fuel tank and doesn't go down the hole?
Why does my low fuel light keep flashing?
bad sensor in the tank. There is a sensor for your fuel gauge and a seperate one for the low fuel light.
Why does my low fuel light keep flashing?
inside your tank there is a floating "guage" that senses your fuel level. Alot of the "floating gauges" are mounted inside a bracket on two sides. the floating part may be wedged in and stuck at the bottom of the bracket.
Reply:sensor in the tank. i had that happen to my car once. you have to drop the tank to fix it. it is pricey

49cc 4 stroke engine trouble?

I have a 49 cc 4 stroke scooter and the battery for the electric start is shot

it has a kick start and when i kick on it the lights on the scooter will start to get a faint dim to them but as i continue to kick the engine will not turn over and start

the scooter has ben sitting in my garage for about 6 months with gas in it .

please help me with any possible advice on what to do to get it running
49cc 4 stroke engine trouble?
Find line from fuel tank to carb and remove from filter outlet. Squirt some gas into the line with a ketchup/mustard type bottle to refill carb. Add around 4 ounces of carb cleaner to the fuel tank.

Buy a "float-type" charger at Wal-Mart for around $20 to maintain the replacement battery.
49cc 4 stroke engine trouble?
What kind of scooter is it. Is it 6 or 12 volts? What do you mean by I continue to kick the Engine and will not turn over? If you Kick the engine crank and the engine does not rotate then it could be internal problem. Doubtful Check that the clutch is not too tight. This will cause the eng . not to rotate when you crack on it. It would be like cranking on the engine while holding the clutch engaged, wont crank. Next the engine needs three things for it to start. compression, fuel, and ignition or spark. check the simplest first. If the engine wont rotate no compression. If it rotates pull the spark plug out and check for it to be clean.check for spark. do not install spark plug to engine yet. connect the plug wire to it and ground it to the cylinder head with the ignition switch on and good charged battery crank the engine and you should see a spark jump at the end of the spark plug. Hold a finger over the spark plug hole on the engine and crank it . It should have some kind of pressure you can here. Then check to see if fuel is getting to the carburetor. Smell the fuel . It shouldn't smell like turpentine. If it dose then you need crab. Overhaul or cleaned out and the gas tank needs to be cleaned out. the fuel filter replaced. good luck

Is anyone having major problems with dex-cool?

I am not sure if I am supposed to flush all this stuff out and start new with something else.
Is anyone having major problems with dex-cool?
cars now require different coolants. the owners manual will tell you if your car needs dex-cool.
Is anyone having major problems with dex-cool?
http://www.dexcoolsettlement.com/

Yes. People have had major problems with dex-cool.

I would change if I were you. BUT, I caution you to COMPLETELY and THOROUGHLY flush out ALL remnants of dex-cool from your cooling system. Mixing dex-cool with regular antifreeze causes it to congeal and potentially clog up your cooling system.

Remember to flush your heater core, remove your thermostat and flush the engine cooling jacket, take off both radiator hoses and flush the radiator. Then reverse flush everything just to be safe.

You can switch to the regular green stuff and be just fine.

What are the steps of painting a car?

What are the steps of removing paint and painting a car. I want to learn so please list the details step by step of removing paint off a car and then painting it such as sanding, primer and etc.. Thanks for this help!
What are the steps of painting a car?
I co-own a customs shop,so I see this done on an every say basis.

1. My shop first off completely disassembles the car before we start to paint it. This means doors, windows, emblems, everything, (We would replace badges and stuff later)

2. Then we look for any imperfections. (rust, dings, knocks, scuffs, scratches, etc.) We would take as many of those out as possible and or fix them up with bondo and fiberglass.

3.. Then you would need to dry sand it, get off all of the gloss off of the original paint. Smooth it down especially on imperfections.

4. Then comes the wet sand, the smooth it down even finer but wet down the finishings so the next step will go down a little smoother.

5. Next is primer. Sometimes it's better to use several coats of primer to ensure the paint's luster.

6. Next comes the first coat or base coat. If you're doing a simple one color, you may do one or 2 base coats and that is it. If you're doing metallic or pealescent paint, this can be far more complex.

7. Then you add another base coat of paint (if you are sticking with that color) If not, add the flashiest color in the middle, and the mediating color last.

8. Lastly, clear coat. Our shop does 4 layers of clear coat to make sure the paint doesnt get scratched up real easy.

9. Then we re-assemble the cars doors and windows when it's dry and they are off! It usually takes us about 4 days to complete a paint job when we're busy.

Our shop does it the professional way, no Maaco paint job here. Our paint jobs run anywhere from 2000-10,000 on occasion.

This is probably more info than you needed, but hope it helps.
What are the steps of painting a car?
Painting a car can be a daunting task, so I'll go through everything as a beginner's guide, with error prone methods and complicated procedures aside for later discussion.

These methods assume you will be using a urethane basecoat / clearcoat system.

First you'll want to remove the old paint, or at least prepare the original finish to be painted over. I do not recommend the latter, but you can scuff the original paint with 320 grit sandpaper and prime over it due to the way manufacturers apply their paint.

The best way, however, is to strip the car down to bare metal. Use a 3M paint stripping disk and a corded drill, as it will make the process a lot less risky and a lot quicker. You will wear 2 or 3 disks out in the process of refinishing an entire car. Work in sections and completely remove the paint in smooth circular motions, this will minimize the amount of prep work after the primer is applied. You will want to mask your windows, chrome trim, and headlamps with green or blue painters masking tape and a heavy gauge craft paper or plastic. I use plastic drop cloth myself, as it's less likely to bleed through and conforms better to the curves and crevices of older cars. You may also want to use a cleaning product at this stage to remove silicone, wax, and oils. Remember, even the oils on your hands that occur naturally can lead to a poor finish.

Priming. I am assuming you're using a spray gun, and not rattle cans. So you'll want to use straight primer as a surfacer. This will be unmixed, un-reduced primer. spray evenly with 50% overlap, meaning with every pass, you should have half of the spray on top of the pass you sprayed last. This will ensure even coverage without runs or sags.

You will want to sand your primer after it has dried with 320 grit sandpaper to remove any imperfections and to smooth the finish for the next layer.

And the next layer is primer sealer. This is a 10% reduced primer, this is also where the color of your primer becomes important. Your basecoat color will be affected by the color of the primer surfacer underneath it. a red oxide color will show blues, greens, golds, and purples well, white or grey should be used on yellow, red, lighter colors, such as pastels or neons, and orange. Black should be used on metallics and pearls, as well as very dark colors such as maroon or midnight blue, and silver should be used on light colored pearls and all candies.

Spray your primer sealer in the same fashion as your primer, 50% overlap, walking along the entire length of the object being painted. Again, you will want to sand this finish, use 400 or 600 grit sandpaper for a smooth and level area for your base coat.

Ahhh, the base coat, where the magic starts.. You will want to reduce your base coat according to the manufacturer's specs for better flow and color. 10% means 10%... so don't judge it by eye. Remember if a color doesn't suit you, you can tint it with a concentrate to change the hue before spraying.. Buy a sheet of metal and mask it off before tinting custom colors, as you can spray a square of the color, let it dry, and spray another square next to it to decide on the proper mixture you want. On the base coat, you'll want to use a very shallow overlap, 25%, you also want to spray lightly, the first pass should look speckled, the next pass will fill more in, and the next will complete the coat. Spraying a wet, heavy film on will lead to curing problems, wrinkling, and fish eyes as the solvents in the paint rise to the surface during the cure.

Once your paint is dry and ready, as long as it's not a metallic or pearl color, feel free to wet sand the color with 2000 grit or 2500 grit sandpaper. This will smooth out the finish for the most important part of a urethane base/clear coat. Wet sanding is little more than sanding the finish under a constant stream of running water to remove particles and lubricate the sandpaper so it doesn't load up. Remember that the color coat on a urethane system will not be glossy, and will flash (dry) dull or eggshell.

The Clear Coat.

Spray your clear with a fresh, new gun, or a gun dedicated to clear coat, as the slightest bit of primer or paint will mar your finish forever. Spray evenly with a 75% overlap, lightly, as with the base coat. You may want two or three full coats, but no more than four, at four, your clear will start cracking or peeling.

Wet sand this with 2000 grit sandpaper, and use swirl mark remover or polishing compound on a random orbital buffer to bring the clear to a glorious shine.

Once the clear coat has dried, it MUST cure before waxing or before harsh chemicals and cleaners are used.

One other thing. ALWAYS use a respirator, and always use gloves and goggles while spraying paints and primers. Some of the compounds in paints and reducers can be extremely hazardous to your health, and can lead to long term respiratory problems. Certain formulations also contain isocyanides, which ARE cyanide and can lead to a quick trip to a hospital. Use adequate ventilation, and try to maximize airflow across the vehicle... make sure your booth is well lit and large enough to work comfortably.

Good luck, and if you need a heads up on where to get your paint, I get mine from TCPglobal.com.

Need help on my 85 bronco?

i have a 85 bronco that the timing is not right ,i pulled the number one plug and put it on top dead center and the balancer was at 0 tdc on the mark and i put the dist rotor facing the number one plug an tried to start it and it backfired out of the carb someone told me that the timing chain had slack in it, could this cause the timing problem? and when i tried to time it at 10 deg btdc like the book said it would not even run and when you went to accelerate it would barely rev up i guess my question is what can i do about this change the timing chain?
Need help on my 85 bronco?
6 degrees.
Need help on my 85 bronco?
if this is a full size bronc with a v8 its real easy to check the timing chain with out opening anything--in the center of the damper is a large bolt with a head af about 1 3/16" .with the ignition key off and for a little more safety-pull the coil wire out--take a breaker bar with the socket and probably a short extension and put it on the big damper bolt-with the distributor cap off turn the breaker bar to the left until the dist.rotor moves==then move the breaker bar to the right-until the rotor turn-if the chain and upper gear are good= the rotor should turn as soon as you move the breaker bar=a little play is normal. if you move the breaker bar handle anything over about 3/4 of an inch before the rotor turns-the chain has stretched and should be replaced as a timing set-crank gearcam gear and chain. another thing is those broncos had a wierd way of setting the timing-i dont recall the procedure from here at home-but its in any chiltons manual. you dont just diconnect the vaccuum line and set the timing-that should have the eec system with the module mounted on the dist. body, one other thing-are you sure you were on #1--cuz fords are the opposite side from gm. i.e. chevy

2000 ford explorer not charging battery/?

My 2000 ford explorer quit charging. Took alt. off and replaced with rebuilt. Has good battery and charged up . started eng. and still wont charge. This is a ford any thing special I should check.? Fuses, broken wires ,fuse links. Has any one had this problum before. Need pro. help. Thanks
2000 ford explorer not charging battery/?
If your battery had a full charge when you replaced the alternator, it should not need to show its charging more than 12 volts. However, if you replace an alternator and tried using a battery without a full charge it can burn the new alt. There should have been a warning tag with the alt. Make sure all connections are tight and clean.

Another problem could be the starter is dragging or discharging the battery.
2000 ford explorer not charging battery/?
How are you determining that the new alternator is not charging? Are you actually using a digital volt meter to measure the voltage being generated off the back of the alternator? Or, are you measuring it at the battery? Or, is the alt/bat light on on the dash?

I would suspect a bad alternator...again. Depending on where you are purchasing your alternator from, it is entirely possible to get one that is bad out of the box. I've installed three bad alternators in a row before that a customer had purchased at a local auto parts store.
Reply:look for a blown fuse first after that i dunno if you just replaced the alternator, it should be good. to confirm that the alternator is good, try this, with the engine running, use a voltmeter and test the voltage at the charge terminal on the alternator, running should be between 13.5 1nd 14.5, but i have a feeling that you will find it to be considerably more. not check the battery voltage with the engine still running. if this voltage is less that the alternator, you have a broken circuit. you can use that same voltmeter and find the brake in the system, but the fuse is the most likely. i have seen this happen in a shop . the tech had just replaced the water pump on a truck and after starting the engine back up , the charge light stayed on. he replaced the radiator, and still the light was on, some one else took over and asked me what i thought, and i did the very test that i described to you and found a blown fuse due to a dropped wrench. that wrench crossed the charge back terminal and the case of the alternator, and blew the fuse.

Does anyone know anything about cars?!?

I just recently got a 1998 hyundai elantra from my grandma and its been stalling (stopping and going) people keep telling me the transmisson is blown o r the filter is clogged but i have no idea and it sometimes it drives just fine. Please help!

Dont listen to the people, sounds like they have no idea.

If the motor cuts out and restarts, it is a electrical fault.

Take the car to a mechanic and have them plug the diagnostic machine into it and get a professional answer.
Reply:Any time car work fine and then completely fail like flipping a switch, that because it is some sort of electrical problem

From you thin description, it is difficult to tell much more. If you can think of more things, please come back.

by the way,,,,,,I like Your way of asking.
Reply:Well, could be a fuel problem. Bad pump. Will it cease at any speed? Or does it only happen on acceleration? Ceasing at any speed sounds like pump, ceasing during acceleration sounds more like filters.
Reply:gas filter is pluged ,the plug drops and car runs fine it plugs back up and no fuel and stalls get new gas filter.

Need to change fuse, but fuse panel/box diagram on the cover & the manual don't match the real fuse panel/box

Aside from going to the dealer-because they're trying to rip me off-what do I do? The diagram is way off. I think my real fuse panel/box has 4 rows, but the diagram has 3. The diagram isn't even right. Next to the diagram in the manual, there are descriptions of the fuses. But, most of the descriptions aren't even on the diagram. For instance, the driver's blinker is mentioned in the description, but isn't on the diagram. That's the one that I need, too. Please help.

Need to change fuse, but fuse panel/box diagram on the cover %26amp; the manual don't match the real fuse panel/box
Well, you don't mention the year, make, model, and engine size of your vehicle so that's going to make it difficult to answer your question. But, having said that, you only change a fuse if it's blown. So, even if you can't find the correct diagram, then you can just pull each fuse and inspect it, or use a fuse tester to find the bad fuse. I would suggest that if you pull each fuse to check it, that you only do them one at a time. Don't pull them all out at once...it'll be hard to remember which one goes where when you go to put them back in.
Reply:Get a test light, attach the clamp to a ground, (a screw or bare metal) then with the point of test light touch each side of each fuse. (a good fuse, the test light glows on both sides) When you find a fuse that doesn't light up replace it with the same fuse size. The ignition switch must be on while testing.

Can't find out why my friend's car is broken, can someone help?

My friend just recently bought a 1996 Saturn SC and he described to me that it feels like there are no gears to put the car into. I've looked online and couldn't find anything to help him. So I went to the people that have helped me in the past. Can anyone tell me possible causes of this?

By the way, the car does start but won't go into drive because of this problem.
Can't find out why my friend's car is broken, can someone help?
clutch
Can't find out why my friend's car is broken, can someone help?
Check the clutch.
Reply:The transmission is blown, he popped a gear if he is lucky or maybe just blew the clutch...if not then he blew the whole tranny (every gear)...the tranny will have to be dropped out and completely stripped and replaced, if he's lucky maybe he just blew 2 or 3 gears and then he will only need to replace those gears. He will probably have to adjust his driving habits or it might just be because the car is old, just make sure he doesn't red line it constantly or push it past the red line, and make sure to shift cleanly and on time. And dont skip gears. Hopefully it is just the clutch.
Reply:transmission or linkage
Reply:Clutch or the clutch linkage.
Reply:It sounds like the clutch disc or the pressure plate! Does the clutch pedal have any tension? also you might need to check ,the adjustment at the shifter could be broken or out of adjustment!! If it needs a clutch it will cost around $150 to replace if you have the know how and the right tools, also the auto parts stores sell books to show you how to do the job step by step!! I myself think that it has something to do with the shifter or the linkage or the tranny itself because a car will go into gear when it is off whether the clutch is bad or not !!! So that is where you should start!! if you need more let me know!! Jason

How can I tell if the A/C in my car has enough, if any oil in the system?

I recently bought a used car and the a/c is not getting very cold, there isnt a lot of pressure in the system (I have a gauge). I know that I need to add more refridgerent, but is there any way of checking the level of a/c oil in the system? I want to make sure there is enough in there so i dont end up blowing up my compressor down the road.
How can I tell if the A/C in my car has enough, if any oil in the system?
Really, you don't. In the service manual, the only way to know how much oil you have is to REMOVE IT ALL. That's pretty much what you'll see in any service procedure.
How can I tell if the A/C in my car has enough, if any oil in the system?
yeah really the only way to know how much oil is to the oil from the system is to do a complete recovery of the a/c system.

you can have a shop do this pretty cheap..in my area ive seen it as cheap as 60 bucks for a complete recovery and recharge..which will come with oil and dye installed...that is if its a reputable shop
Reply:If there has been no major part failure that would release the oil it is ok.
Reply:Look at teh Quick Discconect couplings for the system hoses. If they seem grimey and fouled with oily dirt, the systems o-rings are leaking and you've lost a good bit of your AC oil. If they look clean, you might be able to get away with the oil in the system, but as this is a used (new to you) car, I might be reluctant to guess..

I usually add a can of oil when I recahrge an older leaky system with R134 for a home job that I know the histoy of the car. If not, I suggest you have a total evac and recharge done by someone who's competent. Since you rlow on R134, I'd want to find the leak.

1976 mercury outboard 85 hp, takes 2 cycle oil mixture?

It starts up and runs fine ,but as i bring the throttle all the way back down it shuts off,it wont idle, what could be some of my problems, also i have ISO-HEET to put in the gastank, cause i thought there might be water in the tank is iso-heet alright for it,and can i put carburetor cleaner in the gas ,cause it has dual carburetors, any help would be great ,Thankyou
1976 mercury outboard 85 hp, takes 2 cycle oil mixture?
do you have a water sepperator?

if you do change it also you might want to raise the idle
1976 mercury outboard 85 hp, takes 2 cycle oil mixture?
Yes your motor MUST have oil mixed in the gas. To run without oil will burn it up! It also must have the lower unit in or have water running through it or you will burn the pump, then the motor will overheat. How old is the gas you are trying to use? Fresh fuel will also help. Depending on how long it's been sitting, the carbs probably will have to be removed and cleaned. I would not add anything to the fuel.
Reply:Be carefull to use only Hi octane fuel prefer Mobil and Merc oil at a ratio of 50/1 a dash of lead replacement Will not go astray. This will work in Australia as you can not buy leaded fuel I don,t Know what country you are in but feel the same would apply.Remember 1976 is leaded.

Changing a linear egr valve?

Ok on my Saturn 99 SL1 I remove the air hose and stuff, thats easy. Then I remove the two bolts, thats easy too. What next? What do I do with the gasket? I scrape off the old one, do I need some kind of glue for the new gasket? Im basically wanting to know the steps after removing the bolts. Details please- I haven't worked much on cars before and I'd rather not mess up and ruin a brand new egr valve
Changing a linear egr valve?
You can use high temperature gasket sealant if you want to be sure it doesn't leak. But tell you the truth it shouldn't matter with a egr value. Just make sure everything is clean and bolt it back.

*add on

When i say clean i mean make sure there aren't any high spots from the old gasket. Then kind of wipe it off a little. What you want is a flat surface. you can't hurt that egr valve only thing you can hurt is the gasket(cheap to replace) and wasting your time and having to do it again.
Changing a linear egr valve?
If the old gasket in good shape use it. If damaged replace it. Clean off old put on new. No glue or nothin'. Put valve in place put in bolts, done.
Reply:Yes, remove the old gasket. The new gasket does not have to be glued - just make sure it doesn't slip out when installing the new valve.

BUT, the better question is, "WHY you are replacing your EGR valve?" If you are doing so because you are receiving an EGR Insufficient Flow code, then you are probably wasting good money on that valve. 90% of the time when you get an insufficient flow code it is NOT the valve causing the problem.

I can't tell you how many people come into my shop in a month who have gone to a local auto parts store and had them pull the codes that were causing their Check Engine Light to come on. The store pulls the insufficient flow code and then turns around and sells them an EGR valve. The customer has it put on or installs it themselves and then, of course...it doesn't work! THEN, they come see me wanting to know what went wrong.

Seal a plastic gas tank?

Does anyone know anything that will patch a gash in the bottom of my plastic gas tank? I have tried numerous JB weld products. Unfortunately they only work on metal tanks. Mine is plastic. Seal all seems to work a little bit but still seems to be leaking a bit? Any ideas without having to buy a whole new freaking tank?
Seal a plastic gas tank?
I'm not sure how much that tank costs to replace but ou can get epoxy sealers

http://www.caswellplating.com/aids/epoxy...

that one is 32 bucks some are cheaper. They coat all of the tank.

**add on

Be careful about welding a gas tank it could kill you. If you do weld it use a car with a hose in the tail pipe and fill the tank with the exhast when you are welding it.

Allso the glue stick idea was a good one but glue sticks don't hold up well to gas.
Seal a plastic gas tank?
The tank is about $10 at the auto parts store. Get another one. It is not worth the fire risk to fix something like that.

Good Luck...
Reply:have you tried welding it with a soldering iron?
Reply:I have seen plastic weld kits at various stores. Harbor freight has them. Also in that situation,I would concider a hot glue gun and the various densities of glue sticks avalible. Make sure to work on a flushed tank or tank filled with water. The glue gun gets hot but safety first right. Gas doesn't burn, the vapor does.
Reply:I found some stuff at autozone called plastiweld, it's an epoxy just for that, but it is great, comes in what looks like two black plastic syringes together and when you push the two comes out even, mix it up and put it on, I just ran out fixing washer bottle and overflow bottle on daughters car, stuff was dry in 15 min, and makes jb weld look like crap, try some, I swear by it.

Car begins to overheat when in idle!!!!I?

I have a 1990 Buick Century that begins to do this when I'm in idle for around 2-3 minutes; I want to know what is wrong so that I can get the right parts (radiator/radiator fan/thermostat)????
Car begins to overheat when in idle!!!!I?
Classic sign of failed electric radiator fan, fan relay, wires, fuse, etc. Start by checking the fuse.

The electric fan is only suppose to come on when the car is idling and need air to move through the radiator. When the car is moving, there's enough air movement that the radiator will cool the car (without the electric fan).

Good Luck...
Car begins to overheat when in idle!!!!I?
some where in the fan control circuit or the fan itself you will find the flaw. the relay could be bad, the fan or a fuse could also be the problem. you could also have something as simple as a blown fuse.
Reply:check what the other guys said to check.

Until you get it fix try turning on the ac. In most cases this turns on the fan by passing the bad thermostat switch. It will get you by until you fix it.
Reply:The *likeliest* cause is the cooling fan. Just don't discount other possibilities. Instead of throwing parts at the problem, why don't you have it diagnosed first? Just because the fan is the likeliest cause doesn't mean it couldn't be a faulty water pump or something else. You should be able to look at the fan while the car is running. Does the fan come on when the vehicle's coolant temperature starts to get high? Does it spin rapidly enough? Can you feel it blowing out hot air? If so, then the fan is probably not the culprit.

Hey, I'm not against the do-it-yourself car owner. That's the main reason I take the time to answer questions. However, I hate seeing so many people waste money throwing parts at a problem and ending up costing themselves more than if they had just had a professional diagnose the problem. You can always take it somewhere and have them diagnose the problem and THEN you perform the repair to save money. A decent shop should be able to diagnose your problem in less than an hour.

Either way, good luck and let us know if you have any other questions.
Reply:First I would check the water level and oil level making sure that they are at proper capacity. After that the electric fan(relays fuses and such. All connections.) and or water pump.

Can I go with a forced induction system, with a reduced ratio and pick up 20-40% more hosepower?

I was thinking if I could keep my low end power strong and keeping the lower rpm would also create great milage.
Can I go with a forced induction system, with a reduced ratio and pick up 20-40% more hosepower?
doesn't it depend on the engine and type of vehicle?
Can I go with a forced induction system, with a reduced ratio and pick up 20-40% more hosepower?
unfortunately, more power requires one thing, MORE FUEL, you can not find a STRONG car that produces good fuel economy. mine has 375 horses, and gets about 18 mpg, if i floor it about 13. ( no i am not driving it at this point.)
Reply:Volumetric efficiency in internal combustion engine design refers to the efficiency with which the engine can move the charge into and out of the cylinders. More correctly, volumetric efficiency is a ratio (or percentage) of what volume of fuel and air actually enters the cylinder during induction to the actual capacity of the cylinder under static conditions. Therefore, those engines that can create higher induction manifold pressures - above ambient - will have efficiencies greater than 100%. Volumetric efficiencies can be improved in a number of ways, but most notably the size of the valve openings compared to the volume of the cylinder and streamlining the ports. Engines with higher volumetric efficiency will generally be able to run at higher speeds (commonly measured in RPM) and produce more overall power due to less parasitic power loss moving air in and out of the engine

Volumetric efficiencies above 100% can be reached by using forced induction

in other words..yes..even with a lower compression ratio youll still be filling your cylinders more efficiently to produce more power. and youll feel safe pushing more boost without worrying bout blowing stuff up

im not sure on power gains..that all depends on tuning and the motor design itself.

i get extremely good gas mileage on my vw. 10 psi boost with a head spacer. injectors and a tuned ecm and a 260 cam

good luck
Reply:increased power is always fun but in the case of increasing fuel mileage it would help most if it reduced the number of times the transmission needed to shift down a gear or two from point a-b. if the horsepower/torque increase of your engine is going to be at "real world" engine speeds (low-mid-range) you can see an increase in fuel mileage.

Is a brown Serpentine Belt bad?

The other day my friend came over to my house and we were going out in my car. When I first started it up he was standing outside and noticed that the car was making a little bit of a squealing noise. So we looked under the hood and he noticed that the Serpentine Belt was getting brown on one side. He told me "That's a sign the belt is wearing out! If it gets to brown then it could break. I'd get it taken care of at some point."

I've heard that if the belt is ever cracked or fraying that you definitely should replace it. I had never heard about it getting to brown and wearing out. It does make sense, but I'm curious is my friend right? Should I be really concerned? The car is a 2002 Camry 4Cyl and has about 50,000 miles.
Is a brown Serpentine Belt bad?
I would not worry about it. Brown stains may simply mean it has gotten dirty. Most likley this is a result of running against an tension pully which has some rust on it. Perhaps the car got wet or did not run for a time? If you look at the belt path, you can see where the belt doubles back on itself and runs the flat back over the tensioning pulley.

You should replace the serpentine belt at the same time you replace the water pump and the cam timing belt, generally at 80-90,000 miles. This is a critical maintenance item as if the timing belt breaks, you rmotor is trashed and so then is the car.

Astrobuf
Is a brown Serpentine Belt bad?
Discoloration is a sign of wear. Squealing can be as well. 50,000 miles is pretty good for the life of a belt. Why take a chance? If it breaks while you're driving then at a minimum you've just doubled your repair costs by having to get the vehicle towed. Belts are a maintenance item. They should be replaced at regular intervals as opposed to waiting until they break.
Reply:Yes replace it before it leaves you stranded. If it is turning color on an edge, check the pulleys to make sure they are running correctly. If the discoloration is on one side there is uneven friction. The extra heat caused by misalignment can turn the belt a brown color. Regardless of mileage on the car, if the belt is cracking or fraying, replace it. It could catch you at a really bad time.

What type of refrigerant does a 1990 camry use r-134 or r-12?

im kinda rusty on this but didnt they tranfer to 134 a in 96 ?? anyway look under ur hood if its been retrofited it should have a new sticker if not it should still have a label under the hood telling you whats in your system and if not you can take your car in wereever you get it serviced and have your refrigerant id 'd if they have the proper equipment to do it
What type of refrigerant does a 1990 camry use r-134 or r-12?
R-12, but can be converted.
What type of refrigerant does a 1990 camry use r-134 or r-12?
i think r-12 you can tell by looking at the low pressure inlet valve it should be smaller for r-12, and big for r-134,hope that helps.
Reply:Either way, you can run R-134 in the AC. You'll surely need to have the system pumped down at this age to dry it out.

Astrobuf

.
Reply:your vehicle should have r-12 unless it was retrofited
Reply:most of the time now. people will go to autozone and just buy a retro-fit kit. includes pieces that just thread on to old fittings and you put the freon in it. r-134 everyone is using or even converting the older cars to it.
